Aluminum shingles in Alberta

Aluminum shingles are stamped aluminum roofing panels that don't rust, because there is no steel inside them. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, are made in Canada, and are installed across Alberta by our own company.

What makes an aluminum shingle different

An aluminum shingle is a stamped aluminum panel with a baked finish. Unlike a steel shingle, there is no steel core under the finish, so there is nothing to rust if the finish is scratched or cut. The exposed aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International).

Interlock® aluminum shingles lock to each other on all four sides. The fasteners sit under the course above, out of the weather, so the roof has no exposed screw heads and no rubber washers to age.

Profiles and colours

Slate is by far the most popular profile in Alberta. Cedar Shingle and Shake give a wood look without rot, splitting or the fire risk FireSmart Alberta warns about with wood shakes; Mediterranean Tile suits Spanish and Italianate homes. Nine colours: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown.

On Alberta homes in our job book: Slate 108, Cedar Shingle 13, Shake 4 and Mediterranean Tile 6, along with 22 roofs in the legacy Interlock Shingle profile that came before them.

Aluminum shingles in an Alberta winter

Snow

Aluminum sheds snow. Snow guards go where a slide would land on people, decks or cars, planned at the estimate.

Chinooks and freeze-thaw

The panel absorbs no water, so the freeze-thaw that follows a chinook has nothing to split or loosen, unlike asphalt granules or wood.

Strong sun

Alberta gets a lot of clear-sky sun, and it is strong at elevation. The Alunar® five-layer finish carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty.

Ice dams

No roof stops ice dams on its own: they come from heat loss and ventilation, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. We look at your attic with you.

Aluminum shingles and hail

Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products.

UL 2218 drops steel balls of increasing size on a roof sample; Class 4 is the highest class in the test. It tells you the panel resisted cracking in that test, not that hail can't mark it: large hail can dent aluminum, dents are treated as cosmetic, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in). If your insurer asks for the rating, we give you the listing details.

Questions, answered

What are aluminum shingles?

Aluminum shingles are roofing panels stamped from aluminum sheet and finished with a baked coating, made to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners.

Do aluminum shingles rust?

No. Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum shingle to rust.

Do aluminum shingles dent in hail?

They can. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. The rating means the panels passed the test without cracking, not that large hail can't dent them. The Guardian warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and hail damage is a home insurance matter.

Are aluminum shingles better than steel shingles?

Aluminum doesn't rust and is about one-third the density of steel. Steel shingles usually cost less up front and depend on their zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting. Both can dent under large hail.

How thick are Interlock aluminum shingles?

0.019 in (0.483 mm) nominal base thickness, aluminum alloy per ASTM B209, according to the manufacturer's specification.

Where can I get aluminum shingles installed in Alberta?

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. installs Interlock® aluminum shingles across Alberta, with 3,542 roofs completed since 1999, from one office in Calgary that serves Calgary and Edmonton. Call (587) 317-6517.

Can aluminum shingles be installed over asphalt?

A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
